Symbolic Face Value

The nominal face value given to legal tender gold, silver, palladium and platinum coins that are sold for their precious metal content rather than their legal tender value. A 1oz gold American Eagle coin has a symbolic face value of $50 (US), for example, but its true value is based on the current gold spot price plus premium.
