Gold coins

When circulation coins were still made of gold, a purity of 900/1000 was common for these coins in many countries. By adding 100/1000 copper, the abrasion resistance of the coins was increased, as copper is much harder than gold. Over time, gold with a purity of 900/1000 (or 21.6 carat) has become known as coin gold. See also alloy.
